ARCHÉOL. Édifice caractéristique de l'architecture religieuse mésopotamienne en forme de pyramide à étages, dont le sommet qui pouvait servir à l'observation des astres, portait un sanctuaire, et dont la fonction essentielle était probablement d'établir une sorte de niveau intermédiaire entre les dieux et les hommes. Qu'il s'agisse de ceux de Stonehenge, en Angleterre, ou de la tour de Babel, symbole des ziggourats chaldéennes, composées de sept étages aux couleurs des planètes et couronnées d'un temple doré (...), tous ces bâtiments sacrés étaient en rapport avec les astres (BEER 1939, p. 17).
